The gain rests on the Horizonte Wind Farm — the company's largest-ever investment — and on a growing base of renewable contracts, notably a 15-year, 1,100 GWh/year 100%-renewable supply deal with Codelco that avoids 266,000 tons of CO₂ annually. Since 2018 Colbún has cut its emissions factor by 41%, beating its 30% target, and it now supplies 24% of the electricity consumed by Chile's large-scale mining industry.
Santiago, August 3, 2026. Colbún's renewable energy generation in Chile reached a record 70.3% in 2025, exceeding the National Electric System average, which stood at just over 63%. For the first time in more than a decade, more than half of Colbún's consolidated installed capacity — combining its assets in Chile and Peru — is renewable. By the end of 2025, that share reached 57%, according to the company's newly published 2025 Sustainable Impact Report. The progress accompanies the transformation of Chile's electric system, which in 2010 had only 43% renewable generation, almost all of it hydroelectric.
The shift is underpinned by concrete projects and contracts that explain how Colbún got here. The first is the Horizonte Wind Farm in Taltal, Colbún's largest investment in its history and the largest power plant in Chile. Its entry into operation is the main driver behind the company's renewable leap and positions the Antofagasta Region as one of the country's wind power hubs, and Colbún as the company with the largest installed wind capacity in Chile.
The second is the increase in renewable energy contracts, among which the supply agreement with Codelco stands out. Starting in 2026, Colbún will supply the world's largest copper producer with 1,100 GWh of 100% renewable energy per year, under a 15-year contract that will avoid around 266,000 tons of CO₂ equivalent annually, without changing a single line of its production. It is an example of how that renewable capacity translates into decarbonization for industry: Colbún currently supplies 24% of the electricity consumption of Chile's large-scale mining sector.
This progress is also reflected in emissions. Since 2018, Colbún has cut its CO₂ emissions factor by 41%, surpassing its 30% target, and in 2025 it avoided more than 1.6 million tons of CO₂ per year in its customers' operations.
“Surpassing 70% renewable generation is a turning point. Horizonte shows the leap in clean generation, and the Codelco contract shows how that energy translates into decarbonization for industry. They are two sides of the same commitment. And all of this, backed by an efficient thermal complement, allows us to provide security and continuity of supply when renewable resources are not available,” said José Ignacio Escobar, CEO of Colbún.
